In an exciting first, Bangkok will host works by Australian animation artist and filmmaker, Arlo Mountford. An exhibition of animation and moving image works, “The Hacienda Must be Built” will be showcased from 21 April to 30 May 2009 at Chulalongkorn University’s The Art Center.

Since graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Victorian College of the Arts, Arlo has featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions and in 2007 was a recipient of the prestigious ABN AMRO Emerging Artist Award. He recently completed a residency at the Frank Mohr Institute, Groningen, Netherlands.

For his ninth solo exhibition and first international premiere, Arlo will present two major animations: Return to Point (2006) and STAND UP…(2007). Arlo will also unveil a new work, Return to Form: NDINAVIA, a film shot partially in Venice, Italy and the Victorian Alps in Australia.

Audiences will be stimulated and entertained by these accomplished animation and moving image works. Simultaneously inspired by, and questioning the art and artists of the twentieth century, Arlo has created sophisticated works which represent well known icons in a new and humorous way, investigating their importance whilst subtly conveying an underlying respect for the value of contemporary art.

Funding for the exhibition has been provided by Arts Victoria. The Australian Embassy Bangkok is assisting with coordination and organization.
