Yanawit Kunchaethong

At The Art Center, Office of Academic Resources, Chulalongkorn University June 20 – August 2, 2014   For over 15 years, Assoc. Prof. Yanawit Kunchaethong has been developing a unique printmaking technique using natural pigments as he has drawn inspiration from the forest his father, Sa-nquan Kunchaethong, a teacher and Thai traditional pharmacist, was planting and conserving for 58 years on an area of 108 rai in Cha-am. Thanks to the richness of raw materials, the artist has studied plants and Thai herbs that give colors and developed his method of extracting the pigments and printmaking without using chemicals. He refers to his technique as “organic print.”   The environmentally-friendly concept and creative process blend perfectly and result in abstract monoprints. Their colors and textures are created by nature, showcasing the beauty conceived from the abundance of the forest and trees and the changing seasons. They also show Sa-nquan’s vision in protecting “Paa Sa-nquan” (meaning “Sa-nquan’s forest” as well as “a conserved forest”) so that it can be a source of knowledge about trees and Thai herbs for the nearby communities and reflect the artist’s love for his father and the forest, a legacy that has been passed on to him.
