Montien Boonma (1953-2000) was a famed artist who has had a major influence on Thailand’s and ASEAN’s contemporary art scenes for the past two decades. This year, in commemoration of Montien’s 60th birthday anniversary and his 13th death anniversary, a group of Montien’s former students and assistants who had worked closely with him in various projects, in Thailand and overseas, have come together to stage an exhibition in tribute to their beloved teacher.
Widely known and celebrated on national and international levels, Montien’s art, both mixed media works and installations, has greatly influenced other Thai artists, particularly with how he used materials and interpreted their meanings and the new form of art he employed. His philosophy in art has sparked a new thinking process for younger artists from his lifetime up until now. In addition to bringing fame to his country, Montien also played a crucial role in Thailand’s art education. He dedicated himself to teaching his students at various institutions and was accredited with their success. Many of his students who followed his artistic footsteps have firmly established themselves on national and international levels.
Some of the aforementioned established artists are currently participating in this show. They are Navin Rawanchaikul, Thatchai Hongpaeng, Tawatchai Puntusawasdi, Udom Chimpukdee, Kitti Maleephan, and Amrit Chusuwan (guest artist).
The artworks on display include paintings and mixed media works by Montien Boonma and three-dimensional works, mixed media works, installations, and video art by participating artists. Each of them made their creations out of inspiration from Montien’s way of thinking and creating his artworks.
