Back in the year 2000, Wantanee Siripattananuntakul celebrated the transition of time from “the past” to “the future” with live art. She created 366 t-shirts, each with a print of a date of that year in accordance with the solar calendar. While (most) people were reliving stories of the days that passed through the clothes they wore, each day that year, Wantanee woke up to a new beginning, wearing an especially created t-shirt, ready to document events that would happen with the use of new media tools like a video recorder.

The year 2012 marks the 12th anniversary of a forsaken special occasion. The exhibition “(Dis)continuity” projects images from the past, the present and the future. In this show, Wantanee attempts to show that even though the past is a bygone event of both the present and the future, the three states of time were independent and do not fall in the restrictions of anyone or anything. Each seems to connect to one another, but at the same time is too separated beyond recognition of their relation.

For Wantanee, the past is not just an old, faded memory and the future is not a blurry vision. Both are filled with ambiguity and suspicion. Is the present the line between the past and the future? Does the worthiness of life exist in the past or the present? The artist does not want to raise these questions with the art community, but the public at large. You can relive the memories and paint the future by yourself at “(Dis)continuity”.

About the Artist

After graduating from Silpakorn University’s Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Art, Wantanee Siripattananuntakul continued to learn and practice art on her own for over five years before deciding to further her studies at University of Bremen, Germany. Paradoxical ideas – truth and deception, fun and satire – and relationships between concept and space have formed a major part of her new media/interactive work after returning to Thailand. In 2010, Wantanee created the Wantanocchiobot and in 2008, she staged Wantanee Retrospective. Wantanee was one of the five artists representing Thailand at the 53rd Venice Biennale, Italy, in 2009.
