By Jakkai Siributr

At The Art Center, Center of Academic Resources, Chulalongkorn University

September 15 – October 15, 2011

Opening Reception: Thursday September 15, 2011, 6-8pm

The Art Center, Center of Academic Resources, Chulalongkorn University, is very pleased to announce an exhibition of Jakkai Siributr’s newest works. SHROUD is an expansive show of Jakkai’s increasingly ambitious engagement with diverse materials, references to Thai vernacular aesthetics and socio-cultural critique. SHROUD includes sculptural works made from found objects, installation, and innovations in the artist’s signature use of cloth and embroidery.

The title refers to a play on presence and absence in terms of the artist’s interest in beliefs that underlie animism, ritual and superstition. Jakkai also employs the formal qualities of shrouding to suggest a dynamic between concealment and revelation.

SHROUD explores how belief comes to deny its immateriality and achieve concrete affects. Part of Jakkai’s working method has been to collect photographs from the front pages of newspapers in Bangkok for over a year, since the bloody protests of 2010. He translates these images as allegorical fragments of human folly, vulnerability and corruption and integrates them with references to Buddhist mantras, everyday life in Bangkok and the Thai yantra, or superstitious local symbolism.

The artist’s aim is to disrupt official narratives and challenge entrenched beliefs, calling attention to the ideologies within and questions of our personal relationship to these understandings or worldviews.

SHROUD promises a provocative survey of one of Thailand’s most innovative and increasingly important artists.
